Top 5 things to do in Trinidad for carnival when not feteing

There are many other things you can do in Trinidad for Carnival when you are not feteing. We will share our top 5 things with you over the next couple week. Happy planning for Trinidad Carnival 2019!

Highlight 1: Maracas Beach and Las Cuevas Bay

Enjoy a scenic drive along the North Coast road where you can see the amazing panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea to the west and the lush green forest and varying green and brown tones of bamboo found in the Northern Range rainforest. You may also spot the hills of Paramin cultivated with herbs and spices.

Along the way stop at the Maracas Lookout which appears to be perched on a hillside. You can taste many local snacks as vendors happily answer your many questions about what preservatives were used and what fruit is sweet and what snack is spicy. There is also a beautiful view of the surrounding bays where you can take photos and videos. As you continue your descend towards the beach you will come upon the newly constructed carpark and food vending booths where you will find the Trinidad specialty- Bake and Shark sandwich which can be adorned with a million dressing options including tar-tar sauce, tamarind sauce, local pepper sauce, shadon beni sauce. You can also add toppings from their wide selection like lettuce, pineapples, onions and tomatoes.

You can then proceed across the sand to the beach, which being on the Atlantic coast is a bit rough for bathing but the sounds of soca will be heard and you can join in the locals and tourist alike for a little dance or relax on the beach chairs and umbrellas provided by the company ‘Living Trini’ and enjoy the island vibe and sea breezes while you bite into your Bake and Shark and sip on your Carib beer.

As the locals say ‘After you give the food time to settle’ you continue along the beautiful coast to the more sheltered, Las Cuevas Bay. This is only beach in the Southern English speaking Caribbean that has received a Blue Flag Award due to its purity and adherence to international standards. This beach is surrounded by lush green, rainforest-covered mountains, with a sandy beach lined with small caves. This is where you take a dip before heading back into the bustle and hussle of Port of Spain.
